Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
