Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
