Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
