Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
