Fierce Gales Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to stay indoors as strong winds strike the region.

Powerful winds hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left around 90,000 homes without power and compelled agencies to cancel more than 100 air travel services, based on local media.

The winds are influencing the whole southern region and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have announced rare high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in core zones encompassing these major districts.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more power and communication outages.

Widespread Impact and Crisis Response

The electricity loss is primarily influencing residences predominantly in the South Island, although authorities report that the electricity supply was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services entering and leaving the city have been cancelled as a result of the gusts, whereas various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate disaster response efforts.
